Christmas makeup and company dinners: the look that goes from the office to the cocktail party
A practical guide to turning your professional makeup into a party beauty look without taking it off. Base, eyes, lips and touch-ups to shine from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

December has that curious thing: you walk into the office at nine with your light base and nude lipstick, and at eight in the evening there are croquettes, a cocktail and, with luck, a roscón waiting for you. In between, twenty minutes in the work bathroom (or in the car, let’s be realistic) to go from elegant professional makeup to something that works under warm light and glasses of cava.
The good news: you don’t need to take your makeup off. The key to the move from office makeup to cocktail look is to build a base in the morning that can take layers, and to carry three or four very specific products in your bag.
What changes between daytime and nighttime makeup
During the day we look for skin that breathes, an alert gaze and a lip that lasts through meetings and coffees. At night we raise the intensity: more light on the face, defined eyes and a lip with body. It’s not a different makeup, it’s the same one with more volume.
| Element | Day (office) | Night (cocktail / Three Kings) |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Light, natural finish | Same base + touches of light |
| Eyes | Neutral tone, blended | Brown or garnet smokey + eyeliner |
| Lips | Rosy nude or MLBB | Burgundy, cherry or matte red |
| Blush | Soft peach | Intense pink or terracotta |
| Setting | Translucent powder | Setting mist with glow |
The base: building with the night in mind
The classic mistake is applying a lot of base in the morning “just in case”. The opposite happens: by six in the evening it has oxidised, it settles into the expression lines and any touch-up shows.
Better a medium-light base and a good primer. If you want something that lasts the whole day without oxidising, it’s worth taking a look at this selection of long-wear foundations. For December they work very well:
- Estée Lauder Double Wear (30 ml, €46): satin finish, buildable coverage, lasts through long dinners.
- L’Oréal Infaillible 32H Matte Cover (30 ml, €15.95): low-cost option that behaves well on combination skin.
- Armani Luminous Silk (30 ml, €59): real-skin finish, perfect if you’ll be under flash.
Eyes: from the neutral of the meeting to the cocktail smokey
In the morning, a taupe or golden beige blended across the whole lid and a soft brown in the crease. Brown eyeliner close to the lashes and a coat of mascara. Done.
For the night, you open the palette and add:
- A deep brown, burgundy or plum on the lower lash line, blended with a brush.
- Deepen the crease with the same shade.
- A touch of satin shadow (champagne, rose gold, copper) in the centre of the lid to add light.
- Reinforce the eyeliner with a black one on the upper waterline.
- A second coat of mascara, this time focusing on the outer corner for a feline effect.
If your event is Three Kings and there are family photos involved, avoid large-particle glitters: they reflect poorly under flash. Better pressed metallic shadows such as Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Jean (€29) or the Natasha Denona Mini Bronze palette (€31).
Lips: the gesture that changes everything
If you can only touch up one thing before leaving work, make it the lip. Going from a nude to a matte burgundy or cherry transforms the face more than any eyeshadow.
Options by price range:
- Kiko Powder Power Lipstick in 06 or 10 (3.5 g, €9.99): velvety finish, lasts for hours.
- MAC Matte Lipstick in Diva or D for Danger (3 g, €24.50): the benchmark burgundy.
- Hermès Rouge Mate in Rouge Casaque or Rouge H (3.5 g, €72): if you want the indulgence.
For deeper skin tones, a deep plum and a wine work wonderfully; on fair skin, cherry adds freshness without dulling; on medium skin, the classic burgundy is foolproof. Line with a pencil one shade darker and blend with your finger for a bitten-lip effect.
The touch-up kit that fits in a small case
The essentials to transform the look in ten minutes:
- Blotting papers or loose powder for the T-zone.
- Cream highlighter (Rare Beauty Positive Light in Enlighten, €25) for the cheekbones and cupid’s bow.
- Pink or terracotta cream blush.
- Dark shadow + flat blending brush.
- Night lipstick + lip liner.
- Setting mist (Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, €36) to blend everything.

According to the type of event
Discreet company dinner: keep the base, intensify the crease with brown, satin burgundy lip. No glitter.
New Year’s Eve or Three Kings cocktail: allow more light. Metallic shadow in the centre of the lid, black eyeliner with a small wing, matte cherry-red lip.
Girls’ night out: here you can play. Full smoky smokey, nude lip or clear gloss on top for contrast.
One last tip
The Christmas beauty look that ages best over the course of the night is always the one that respects your base. Less product in the morning, more strategic layers in the afternoon. And a mirror with natural light in your bag: no Three Kings photo deserves discovering at eleven that you had your blush up to your temple.
