Summer christening makeup: how to make it last through the ceremony, the photos and the aperitif

A practical guide to making your makeup survive the church, the sun and the post-ceremony vermouth. Preparation, breathable base, setting and express touch-ups.

A christening in July or August has its own rules. Between a church without air conditioning, photos at the door in full sun and the aperitif on a terrace at 33 degrees, makeup gets tested in barely four hours. And no, piling on more powder won’t cut it: if the base isn’t set up properly from the start, it will slide down your neckline before the godfather has even finished his toast.

Here’s how to build makeup that really lasts, with specific products and no impossible tricks.

Why summer makeup has its own rules

Heat dilates pores, activates sebaceous glands and melts any heavy texture. Add sweat, sunscreen and the habit of touching up your nose every twenty minutes, and if you don’t control it, the result is a cakey T-zone and vanished cheeks.

The key is to work in thin layers, choose textures suited to heat (water-based, gel, serum) and set with a very light powder. Never pile it on.

Skin preparation: the foundation for everything to last

Start the night before. A double cleanse, a niacinamide serum (it regulates sebum) and a light moisturiser. If your skin is very oily, avoid rich creams: they will work against you.

On the morning of the christening, cleanse, tone and apply a gel moisturiser. Wait five minutes before continuing. That time is non-negotiable: if you apply base over cream that is still damp, no primer will save it.

The mattifying primer: your best ally against shine

This is where the battle is won. A good mattifying primer creates a film that absorbs excess oil and holds the base in place for hours.

  • The Porefessional Matte Rescue by Benefit (15 ml, around €34): a gel-cream with green tea extract, ideal for combination skin.
  • Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser (22 ml, around €11): the low-cost option that surprisingly works very well on the T-zone.
  • Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (30 ml, around €68): includes SPF 15 and a velvety finish, for higher budgets.

Apply it only where you shine: forehead, nose, chin. On the cheeks, if your skin is dry, a hydrating primer is better.

Foundation that won’t melt at 35 degrees

Forget dense full-coverage formulas. In summer we want medium, buildable coverage with a natural or satin finish.

  • Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place (30 ml, €45): the classic long-wear benchmark. It holds up to anything.
  • L’Oréal Infaillible 32H Fresh Wear (30 ml, €16.99): the drugstore alternative, breathable and with good coverage.
  • Armani Luminous Silk (30 ml, €66): lighter, with a luminous finish, for normal to dry skin that wants a real-skin effect.

Apply it with a damp sponge, not a brush. The sponge presses the product in and leaves a thinner layer. And please, use a small amount: you can always add more.

Strategic concealer: only where it’s needed

In summer, less is more. A touch under the eyes (a hydrating formula, such as NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, €30) and another on any spot of redness with a more covering concealer. Blend with your finger: heat plus product gives a perfect fusion.

Brows and eyes: waterproof without exception

If there is one sacred rule for a summer christening, it’s this: everything around the eye must be waterproof. Sweat, tears of emotion, a drop of cider… whatever it is, it’s going to fall.

  • Mascara: Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof (€28) or Essence Lash Princess Waterproof (€4.50), surprisingly good.
  • Eyeliner: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner (€22) lasts entire days.
  • Brows: a setting gel such as Benefit 24-Hour Brow Setter (€28) keeps them in place until dinner.

A simple eye works better than an ambitious smoky look: cream shadow in earthy tones, blended with your finger, and mascara. That’s it.

Blush and bronzer: better in cream

Powders on hot skin tend to cake. Cream or liquid blush and bronzer melt into the base and last longer.

Try Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush (€23) or Milani Cheek Kiss Cream Blush (€13). One drop on each cheek, blended with the sponge while it’s still damp.

Lips that withstand photos, kisses and the aperitif

This is where tint lip products come in: intense pigment, natural finish and real staying power. The YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Bold (€39) and the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink (€12.99) survive wine glasses and canapés. If you prefer a juicy finish, a Benetint stain by Benefit over a balm works wonders.

Setting spray: the step you can’t skip

A good setting spray seals all the work. Urban Decay All Nighter (€34) is the benchmark; Milani Make It Last (€12) does a remarkable job for less.

Spray from 20 cm, in a cross pattern, and let it dry in the air. Don’t fan it with your hand: you’d just be spraying the product into the air.

A minimal touch-up kit for your bag

  • Blotting papers (the Clarins ones, €8, are a classic).
  • Compact translucent powder: Laura Mercier Translucent (€43) or Rimmel Stay Matte (€5).
  • Lipstick and a mini setting spray.

Nothing more. If you carry half your vanity case, you’ll end up reapplying and ruining everything.

The mistakes that ruin makeup at a summer christening

Applying too much base, skipping the primer, using loose powder with heavy brushstrokes, touching up with more product instead of blotting first, and choosing a drying matte lipstick that looks cracked after two hours. If you recognise yourself in any of these, you know where to start.
